Last year I went to the local garden centre for a Christmas tree. Not wanting to spend loads I bought a reduced small pine tree for our flat. Mostly as a joke and also because we weren't around much during the holidays. . . . After a busy few days @westgatehallcanterbury for #etsymadelocalcanterbury I came home and did some potting to unwind. . . . This is an Gonialoe variegata or tiger aloe. It will take 3-7 years to be fully grown at which point it will be around 25cm tall. It has triangular leaves arranged in an outward spiral pattern, 3 leaves per level. It will eventually produce orange flowers. . . . These are another species that aren't actually aloes dispite their common name. However they are still hardy succulents but I have found they really hate over-watering! . . . The pot is an older effort by me from when I was first experimenting with loads of different glazes. #plants #succulents #pots #ceramics #pottery

Another low maintenance variety, and ones that are very popular, are air plants - genus Tillandsia. . . . These need a bit of a mist every few weeks and as long as they are not in direct burning sun seem to be fairly happy wherever. They can produce flowers and will propagate readily when established. . . . I would always try to go for more colourful varieties like this red one! Like a turning tanker I am finally getting to the point where I know what I make (for now) and what I grow (for now). . . . However that does lead me to have a fair few extra old pots and plants. I guess the best thing to do is to combine them and sell them at the Christmas fayres, right? . . . If anyone cares I am going to concentrate on the aloes and smaller pots for the time being, some terracotta as it's the best and some highly glazed as people seem to like that. . . . #plants #growing #pottery #ceramics

This one has already produced several offshoots though they seem to be very slow to grow. I may be being impatient though. . . . This is a Dieffenbachia picta Camilla, you will often see these sold in supermarkets as foliage plants (tis where I got this one). . . . The popularity it has hides the fact it can be a very tricky plant to keep happy and healthy. A healthy plant can grow over 5ft and give a false palm look to a room. Especially good with the beautifully coloured leaves. However in the wrong conditions, of which there can be many, the plant can drop flowers, become tall and thin and eventually die off. . . . Still for now this one seems happy and healthy enough, again it is in one of my hand built pots, and will be available @etsyuk #madelocal in Canterbury. . . . #plants #growing #foliage #etsymadelocal #pottery #ceramics #craft

Another hand built pot this time with a Sansevieria trifasciata laurentii or. Mother-in-law's tongue plant. Well looked after plants can get to around 3ft in height and will produce small fragrant flowers. It can be propagated by dividing clumps up or taking cuttings. . . . This plant is incredibly hardy and only massive over watering or really cold temperatures can truly kill it. I will have this at my @etsyuk stand for the made local fayre, first weekend in December in Canterbury. . . . The pot has been hand built and glazed and retains crinkles and folds from the plasticity of the clay. Another hand built pot this time with a Sansevieria trifasciata laurentii or. Mother-in-law's tongue plant. Well looked after plants can get to around 3ft in height and will produce small fragrant flowers. It can be propagated by dividing clumps up or taking cuttings. . . . This plant is incredibly hardy and only massive over watering or really cold temperatures can truly kill it. I will have this at my @etsyuk stand for the made local fayre, first weekend in December in Canterbury. . . . The pot has been hand built and glazed and retains crinkles and folds from the plasticity of the clay. This is a Haworthiopsis attenuata or a Zebra Haworthia. These succulents are very aloe like and often mistaken for them (I have on the past, a lot). The name comes from the zebra stripes across the leaves of the plant. Confusingly there is also H. fasciata which is also a Zebra Haworthia however they have smoother inner sides to their leaves and attenuata have the white tubercles on both sides. . . . These are hardy succulents which like quick draining soil and lots of light, though not scoring direct sunlight. If looked after well they will propagate and form clumps of plants like they do in the wild. They like lots of water in the summer but less the rest of the year and you should avoid over-watering and keep the soil fairly dry between watering. All being well they should flower in November and December. . . . Botany lesson over, the pot is white clay, hand thrown with lots of glaze to give that shiny pearlescent look. We had friends over for dinner last night and they brought us a new plant. This has gone straight into a spare pot although I need to find or make a deeper one for it to go in permanently. . . . I believe this to be a Cordyline australis, though I could be wrong. If I am right it's commonly known as a cabbage palm which is a name that makes me chuckle. . . . Love growing foliage plants, more so than aloes I think, love having big leaves and different shades of green. First of the hand built new pots is ready. The others need glazing but the plan is to make some more terracotta ones soon. . . . Originally the grapefruit was not going in this, however it's old pot could not store enough water for its needs so by default it had to go in. . . . Really pleased with the size of these and how they have come out, a lot larger than I can currently throw which is good. Can't wait to glaze the others! . . . Also not as heavy as it looks, might try a porcelain version... . . . #ceramics #pottery #pots #handbuilding #plants #citrus

Over glazing a pot has many risks. It can stick to a kiln shelf when if the glaze runs too much. Or it can cause the glaze to crack and in some cases the pot to shatter. . . . However the results are often worth these risks. The colours organically flowing together and interacting is something I strive for. I am also a massive fan of metals in the glaze, in particular copper which produces a great red colour which contrasts with the shades of blue I prefer on my pots. . . . As ever though the beauty of the pots, to me, is the random nature of the glaze dripping and flowing as it heats up in the kiln. The result is akin to a fire, something you can stare into for ages and see different things going on... . . . Well I think so. #clay #glaze #pottery #ceramics #effects #art #firing #craft

My peace lilly (species of the genus Spathiphyllum, also known as a white flag plant) needs to be moved to a sunnier and warmer spot I think. . . . Peace lillys are easy to care for and keep but also can be over cared for and suffer. They don't need much watering and shouldn't be in full sunlight. . . . They are great for homes as they do actually take toxins out of the air (benzene and formaldehyde for example). As well as looking great. . . . My peace lilly (species of the genus Spathiphyllum, also known as a white flag plant) needs to be moved to a sunnier and warmer spot I think. . . . Peace lillys are easy to care for and keep but also can be over cared for and suffer. They don't need much watering and shouldn't be in full sunlight. . . . They are great for homes as they do actually take toxins out of the air (benzene and formaldehyde for example). As well as looking great. . . . First aloe I got has become a beast. . . This was a plant I got off freecycle as someone had loads of plants they didn't want to bin and I had a lab to decorate. Little did I know it would revive my love of growing so dramatically. . . Yesterday's mini lesson on botany seemed to go well so... . A few years ago I tried growing the pips of some lemons and grapefruit. The grapefruit survived without me realising and grew into a lovely little citrus tree that I have kept bonsai'd in a small terracotta pot. . These are some of the cuttings from the tree in order to keep is small and well pruned. They are growing in the first vase I ever threw and once they have established routes I will pot them up for sale. . Interestingly grapefruit (Citrus x paradisi) is actually an accidental cross of a sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) and a shaddock (Citrus maxima). For those I taught GCSE biology too this is an example of a hybrid fruit. . They originate from Barbados and both the plants they are crossed from were introduced species! . Also they name comes about because when they fruit it appears in clusters similar to grapes before they develop. . This has turned into something a bit different. Acrylics on canvas, started off as a few broad pallette knife strokes to use up spare acrylics rather than let them go to waste. Sooooooooooo, interesting end to honeymoon. Really showed how awesome my wife is though. While I struggled to control my emotions she booked a change of flights, a hotel room, a hire car to get us from Bristol to London and had the presence of mind to add to the car parking in London. I would have managed to have a coffee and cry... This morning caught a boat taxi and was treated to this stunning view. Nice end to everything all considered. #honeymoon #croatia #lucky

This is either the best or worst thing ... Best - as a Labour member and Corbyn fan I am pleased to see them making ground and his brand of politics actually resonating with people. Hopefully this allows political debate and thought to move forward. Plus Shows that the caustic media we have in this country are outdated in the social media age. Worst- hung parliament (no decision) is not great, I can't see a coalition being formed which means another general election coming up. Plus Brexit (ugh) negotiations are still happening next week. With no government. Yaaaay! At least the Tories got a kicking and the PM's grab for more power and a stronger mandate to shaft people has blown up in their face. Political posts over, art to resume soon. #election #politics #labour

Had a load of experiments out of kiln. This is my favourite but it's a close call. Ink spots, copper adventurine, sea green and sedona sky on this one. Learning a lot about glazes, hopefully will put it all to good use. This one was tuxedo black base coat (not a step I will repeat), copper adventurine, sea green and mirror blue. The trick with the copper seems to be to slather it on! We shall see if that is true with the new batch when they are fired. #glaze #ceramics #abstractart #pottery #colour #learning

The design was carved in the next day, proving that you really need to turn pots to get the best out of them! Glaze is tuxedo black sponged back to give a dry brush effect. Enjoy this vase but it only holds a couple of flowers... #vase #ceramics #ceramicart #abstractart #pottery #glaze #throwing
