Yesterday's mini lesson on botany seemed to go well so... . A few years ago I tried growing the pips of some lemons and grapefruit. The grapefruit survived without me realising and grew into a lovely little citrus tree that I have kept bonsai'd in a small terracotta pot. . These are some of the cuttings from the tree in order to keep is small and well pruned. They are growing in the first vase I ever threw and once they have established routes I will pot them up for sale. . Interestingly grapefruit (Citrus x paradisi) is actually an accidental cross of a sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) and a shaddock (Citrus maxima). For those I taught GCSE biology too this is an example of a hybrid fruit. . They originate from Barbados and both the plants they are crossed from were introduced species! . Also they name comes about because when they fruit it appears in clusters similar to grapes before they develop. . Interesting eh? #plants #botany #ceramics #bonsai #growing #pottery #craft #facts #interesting
