Normally on the side this pot looks dark. Shine a light directly on it and it comes to life. . . . Love the effect from playing around with glazes. Everything can be subverted and some incredible finishes can be achieved. . . . I turned this pot within an inch of its life when I made it. Aim to recreate the shape this weekend but on a bigger scale with hand built plant pots... . . . #experiment #glaze #pots #pottery #ceramics #art

Over glazing a pot has many risks. It can stick to a kiln shelf when if the glaze runs too much. Or it can cause the glaze to crack and in some cases the pot to shatter. . . . However the results are often worth these risks. The colours organically flowing together and interacting is something I strive for. I am also a massive fan of metals in the glaze, in particular copper which produces a great red colour which contrasts with the shades of blue I prefer on my pots. . . . As ever though the beauty of the pots, to me, is the random nature of the glaze dripping and flowing as it heats up in the kiln. The result is akin to a fire, something you can stare into for ages and see different things going on... . . . Well I think so. #clay #glaze #pottery #ceramics #effects #art #firing #craft

There is always a temptation with these to go back and meddle but so far I have resisted. . . . My peace lilly (species of the genus Spathiphyllum, also known as a white flag plant) needs to be moved to a sunnier and warmer spot I think. . . . Peace lillys are easy to care for and keep but also can be over cared for and suffer. They don't need much watering and shouldn't be in full sunlight. . . . They are great for homes as they do actually take toxins out of the air (benzene and formaldehyde for example). As well as looking great. . . . Mine is, naturally, in a funky hand thrown pot because of course it is! . . . #plants #peacelilly #growing #ceramics #pottery #craft

Got to add that I love textures in my pottery, stuff to touch and feel and interact with. Love to hold a pot and feel it. Plus it fits in with the idea of Wabi Sabi. First aloe I got has become a beast. . . This was a plant I got off freecycle as someone had loads of plants they didn't want to bin and I had a lab to decorate. Little did I know it would revive my love of growing so dramatically. . . Yesterday's mini lesson on botany seemed to go well so... . A few years ago I tried growing the pips of some lemons and grapefruit. The grapefruit survived without me realising and grew into a lovely little citrus tree that I have kept bonsai'd in a small terracotta pot. . These are some of the cuttings from the tree in order to keep is small and well pruned. They are growing in the first vase I ever threw and once they have established routes I will pot them up for sale. . Interestingly grapefruit (Citrus x paradisi) is actually an accidental cross of a sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) and a shaddock (Citrus maxima). For those I taught GCSE biology too this is an example of a hybrid fruit. . They originate from Barbados and both the plants they are crossed from were introduced species! . Also they name comes about because when they fruit it appears in clusters similar to grapes before they develop. .
